whether the circumstances requiring Mr Rennie's return to his Colonial duties are of a permanent character, but very urgent should they not do so, His Lordship would suggest for the consideration of the Treasury that they should ask the Duke of Buckingham's consent to Mr Rennie's being allowed to remain for the present in this Country. Lord Stanley attaches much importance to Mr Rennie being at hand to advise the Treasury Commissioner on public accounts and to assist the Chief Clerk of this office in setting arrangements on foot for the new Consultaties required under the Exchequer and Audit Departments Act and this Lordship conceives that at all events it would not be desirable that Mr Rennie should be sent back until a decision is come to upon the important suggestions with regard to the Audit of the China and Japan accounts submitted to the Treasury in my letter of the 8th of January 1867
